God Is Faithful…to Me!
By: Cindy Browning
God can use anything He wants to show us that He sees us, hears us, loves us, and has a purpose for us. For Noah and his family, it was a sight never seen before, a rainbow. For Moses, it was a burning bush. For Jonah, it was a really big fish. All through scripture, God has used ordinary things in extraordinary ways to show us His faithful character. For me, it was a mountain… of dirty laundry.
On a certain Wednesday night in the spring of 1993, I was struggling, big time. We had just moved into a new house and stuff was everywhere. I was teaching school and I was exhausted. I was guilt-ridden for not staying home with our two-year-old baby girl and was guilt-ridden for being envious of all my stay-at-home mom friends. I felt bitter about not having any grandparents nearby to help like many of my other friends had. I had big feelings just bubbling up inside of me about so many things. And to make matters worse at 9:00 that night, our baby girl was in her crib screaming her head off and would not fall asleep. I knew the problem but could not solve it. Her pacifier was gone, and she was an addict. She had to have it. Out of all the ones we had, I could not find one anywhere. I searched high and low while Kent was kicked back in the recliner watching Melrose Place, ignoring it all. I was so, so tired.
I went to our bedroom closet, closed the door, got on my knees, and began sobbing before God. I don’t know who was crying more -- me or my baby girl. All those big feelings bubbling up came spilling out. As I finished praying, still on my knees, I pushed a mountain of dirty laundry away from me, and as I did, a pacifier popped out from that laundry pile and landed right in front of my left knee. You can only imagine how thankful I was! God knew that pacifier was there all along. He provided a situation for me to come to Him so He could show me that He was watching over me and my family.
My baby girl is now a mother to four precious children. Her youngest loves his pacifier too. Watching him with his special pacifier reminds me of that Wednesday night thirty-three years ago when God showed me that prayer is a declaration of faith in a God that can move mountains and show you what is hiding underneath. He is Faithful.
Mark 11:23
Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.
